Special Correspondent

Chief Minister M. Karunanidhi will inaugurate the 18th National Children's Science Congress on December 27. Former President A.P.J. Abdul Kalam and Nobel Laureate Venkatraman Ramakrishnan would be among other eminent scientists who would be interacting with children during the five-day annual event to be held at Vel's University in Pallavaram.

The theme of this year's event is Land Resource – Use For Prosperity and Save for Posterity. Among more than 3 lakh papers received from all over India, 650 were selected for presentation at the Congress. This was disclosed at a joint press briefing on Thursday by Ishari K.Ganesh, president of Vel's University, S.Vincent, Member Secretary of Tamil Nadu Council for Science and Technology and chairman of the organising committee of the Congress and C.Ramalingam, secretary of the organising committee.

They said the TN Science Forum and TN Council for Science and Technology would be the prime hosts, while Vel's University would be the co-host.

A total of 1,500 children would be taking part. Actor Kamal Hassan would be inaugurating a cultural festival that would be held alongside the Science Congress. Eighty children would be selected to attend the Indian Science Congress, to be held at SRM University in Kattankulathur between January 3 and 7. Mr. Ramalingam said that India was the only country in the world to organise science congresses for children for 18 consecutive years.

Further, selecting children to attend the senior congress was another unique aspect. Chennai last played host to Children's Science Congress in 1998 at Anna University, he recalled.
