18th National Children Science Congress underway in Chennai



Chennai: The 18th National Children Science Congress, held by the National Council for Science and Technology Communication (NCSTC) functioning under Department of Science and Technology is underway in Chennai. The Congress, held at VELS Deemed University Campus at Pallavaram, is a five-day programme spanning December 26-31.

The concept of the congress is to provide a forum to children from formal school system as well as from out of school, to exhibit their creativity and innovativeness and more particularly their ability to solve a societal problem using the method of science.


Children from all over the country are presenting their projects in the Congress. Out of the total 2000 delegates, 300 are guide teachers who are experienced science teachers, scholars, scientists and eminent science activists from research institutions round the country. 40 young scientists are also participating from Asian Countries.

The Tamil Nadu Science Forum, a renowned Non Governmental Organisation, Tamil Nadu State Council for Science and Technology an autonomous apex body under Higher Education Department, Government of Tamil Nadu and VELS Deemed University, a prestigious institution in Chennai, is jointly looking after all the arrangements in organising the Congress.

The focal theme for NCSC-2010 is ‘Land resources- Use for prosperity, save for posterity.’ The following are the main activities of the Congress:
Presentation of research papers by the young scientists.
• Ten concurrent sessions for continuous three days to present the papers
• A “Science Corner” for several activities
• A programme called “Meet the Scientist”
• Interaction of c
hildren with scientists
• Cultural events to exhibit children’s artistic talents.
• Workshop for Science Teachers (from among those who accompany the delegates)

Dr A P J Abdul Kalam, Former President of India, Dr Mayilsamy Annadurai, Project Director, Chandrayan (I and II), ISRO and Dr Venkatraman Ramakrishnan, Nobel Prize winner (Chemistry) will be the distinguished guests to motivate the young scientists in the Congress.
